The slip and fall attorneys in Troy Hills, NJ, at Garden State Justice Group would like to share some of the history and historical landmarks within the community.

Troy Hills

The township of Parsippany-Troy Hills is located within Morris County in the state of New Jersey. The township takes up 16,224 acres and includes 1,100.8 of water, such as Boonton Reservoir, Troy Brook, Lake Parsippany, and Eastmans Brook. The nearby communities are Morris Plains, Boonton, Pine Brook, Cedar Knolls, and Denville.

History

Lake Parsippany is said to be caused by the melting of the Wisconsin Glacier around 13,000 BC. The Paleo-Indians were the first to inhabit the area, in small groups living off the natural resources of the plant and animal life. Native Americans, such as the Lenape Native Americans, began dwelling near the river banks of both the Rockaway River and the Whippany River. They fished and hunted before migrating more inland during the autumn months.

The Dutch settled in the colony of New Netherland from 1611 until 1614. They traded furs and food with the Natives in return for items such as:

  • metal pots
  • knives
  • guns
  • axes
  • blankets

Trade continued for many years until a battle began between the Dutch and the Natives in 1643. This feud slowed down further development and settlements until the early 1660s. The township was incorporated in 1928, taking land from Hanover Township.

Historical Landmarks

Within the community are some landmarks that allow the visitors and residents to glimpse the past. The Benjamin Howell Homestead, located on South Beverwcyk Road, was constructed in 1763, but additions were made to the building in 1793. The home sat on 160 acres

Another historical home would include the Livingston Benedict House, located on Old Parsippany Road. It was built in 1752 and was once home to the first governor of the state.
