Vineland is a 44153.6-acre city that is located in the northern region of Cumberland County, New Jersey. The town is less than a one-hour drive west from Atlantic City, New Jersey, and an hour's drive south of Philadelphia, Pennslyvania. The main roadways in the city are NJ Route 55, South Main Street, Landis Avenue, and Chestnut Avenue.
In 1861 Charles K. Landis bought 30,000 acres and an additional 23,000 in 1861. He desired to create an alcohol-free community or temperance town based on a mix of progressive thinking and agriculture. House began construction in 1862, followed by the railroad. By 1875 the population was 11,000.
The area was named after its soil's ability to grow grapes. Thomas Bramwell Welch purchased the local grapes for his production of Welch's Grape Juice. Another well-known food production company to take advantage of the fertile soil was the Progresso soup company. However, the area would come to be known as the "Egg Basket of America" due to its poultry industry.
The area was also home to the Vineland Developmental Center, New Jersey's first school for the intellectually disabled. The institution began with housing women with mental disabilities and has now expanded to include an east and west campus.
Vineland is home to a museum that holds the largest collection of the town's history. The Vineland Historical and Antiquarian Society are one of the oldest in the state, founded in 1864, and the museum has been open to the public since 1910.
The eccentric George Daynor built the area's next attraction, the Palace of Depression, 1932. Daynor, who claimed that he was led to New Jersey by an angel, built the house during the depression for a mere four dollars. Daynor was also referred to as the "most photographed man in the world" and served a year in prison for making false claims to the FBI during a kidnapping case.
