Wanamassa

The unincorporated community of Wanamassa is also a census-designated place or CDP. It is located in the Ocean Township that is situated in the eastern region of Monmouth County in central New Jersey. The 737.28-acre community has 24.32 acres of water, such as Deal Lake. The neighboring towns are West Allenhurst, Whitesville, Interlaken, and Asbury Park. 

History

The town was originally inhabited by the Lenape Native American Indians that had multiple encampments set up along the coast and the edge of the lake. In 1687, a Scottish surveyor by the name of  Gavin Drummond purchased the land. He traded the following items for an even exchange: 

  • one gun
  • a kettle
  • five coats 
  • two pounds of “weight” powder

The town would be named after the Native American chief that sold it to Drummond. The chief believed that the land was to be shared for everyone's use and was unaware of Drummond's plans to develop it. Eventually, the Native Americans were forced to move further west. 

Neighborhood

The neighborhood has a relatively large Jewish population. The college preparatory yeshiva Ilan High School is a private all-girls school located in the northern region to cater to this community. The state funds bussing to private as well as public schools, so the students from within the community can attend the private school as long as they pay the tuition. 

Demographics

According to the 2010 census count, the area had 4,532 residents, which included 1,648 households and 1,229 families. This was a decrease of 0.4% from the 2000 count of 4,551 residents. The racial breakdown of the population was as follows:

  • 88.39% white 
  • 3.42% African American
  • 6.47% Hispanic or Latino
  • 0.35% Native American
  • 4.39% Asian
  • 0.20% Pacific Islander
  • 1.21% other races
  • 2.03% two or more races

English is the primary language for approximately 86.4% of the community's population, in addition to 8.3% speaking Polish and some speaking Spanish. As many as 10.7% of the residents were born in countries other than the United States. The ancestral makeup of the residents was the following:

  • 25.2% Irish
  • 20.7% Italian
  • 14.4% German
  • 14.1% English
  • 8.5% Polish
  • 1.6% Austrian

Within the community, the annual income median per household was $61,607 in 2000. For a family, the median income was $64,960. The occupational breakdown of the employed townspeople was the following:

  • 44.1% management and executive occupations
  • 24.6% sales and service roles
  • 19.7% manufacturing and laborer professions
  • 11.7% clerical, assistant, and technical support
