A Historic Look into Wayne, NJ

The personal injury attorneys in Wayne, NJ, at Garden State Justice Group, have sponsored the following passage on the area's history.

Wayne

Within Passaic County, New Jersey, lies a township called Wayne. The town takes up 25.14 square miles and consists of 5.64% water, such as Point View Reservoir, Pine Lake, and Packanack Lake. It is the 21st largest community in New Jersey. The area is 32.3miles west of Yonkers, New York. Some of the major roadways in the township are Route 202, the Hamburg Turnpike, Valley Road, and Ratzer Road.

History

Aside from the Lenape Native Americans, the first European settlers in the area now known as Wayne was Arent Schuyler in 1694. He was instructed by the British to investigate rumors that the French were conspiring for the Native American Indians to rebel against the British. Schuyler did not find this to be true but instead found the native's crops growing near a fertile river valley. After reporting back to his superiors, they purchased some 5,000 acres of the area from the Lenape Tribe.

During the Revolutionary War, the area was used by General George Washington as his headquarters. The Dey Mansion, now known as Dey Mansion Washington's Headquarters, was used multiple times in 1780 by Washington himself. Many encampments surrounded the area.

The area was predominantly farmland during the 18th and 19th centuries. Coal and produce were transported to the town on the canal until the construction of the railroad in the late 19th century. There were a few industrial businesses in the area that included:

  • grist, saw, and cider mills
  • blacksmiths
  • a Laflin & Rand gunpowder plant

As the population began to increase due to the railroads, the area transformed into a retreat for New York's wealthy. After World War II, most of the homes became occupied year-round instead of only in the summer. The population would increase from 1950 to 1960 by 148.3%, and residential neighborhoods would replace the farmland.

The area is predominantly a white-collar city with more than 88.63% of its employed adults working as managers, professionals, and office workers.
