Wellwood

The neighborhood of Wellwood is located in the borough of Merchantville in the northern section of Camden County in New Jersey. The community shares borders with Pennsauken Township, Stockton, Rosedale, and Colwick. The main roads that travel through the area are North Centre Street, East and West Chestnut Avenue, Park Avenue, Cove Road, and East and West Maple Avenue. 

History

The area was mainly farmland until 1851, when the extension of the railroad brought in development. Homes in the area began developing along Maple Avenue following the opening of the Benjamin Franklin Bridge in 1926. The avenue was constructed upon a ridge and offered the community "pure" air. 

In 1928, the area became the home of Wellwood Manor. Using Tudorbethan style or Tudor revival architecture, the brick residence became a charming addition to the many other architectural structures. The manor underwent a complete renovation in 2012 that included a new fountain in the courtyard inspired by Rialto Bridge in Venice, Italy, as well as:

  • recovering the original hardwood floors
  • marble for the bathroom floors 
  • new tile in the bath and showers
  • entrance doors that were replicas to the original
  • high-efficiency windows

Neighborhood

The neighborhood is home to Wellwood Park, located between West Maple Avenue and Myrtle Avenue. The park has a playground, picnic tables, tennis courts, shaded benches, and an athletic field.

The town's business district is located along North and South Centre Street. Many of the buildings still offer the historic architectural charm. Some of these include:

Demographics

The neighborhood had 999 residents and included 326 households. The racial makeup of the community was the following:

  • 54.3% white 
  • 35.2% Hispanic or Latino
  • 9.1% African American
  • 1.4% Asian

English is spoken by 78.3% of the residents, and 15.4% speak Italian. Some other languages spoken within the community are Spanish, Vietnamese, and Polish. The following are the most common ancestries found within the townspeople: 

  • 20.6% Irish
  • 17.6% Italian
  • 14.1% German
  • 11.2% Puerto Rican
  • 7.7% English
