Blimps were known to patrol the area in search of German U-boats during World War II. The U-boat periscopes were spotted by local fishermen just off the shore. Many troops were stationed at the Bayview Hotel as a precaution.
During the war, many German Jews fled Germany in search of freedom from the fatal persecutions they faced in their home country. Among these was the Wertheim family. Guenther Wertheim, the grandson of Abraham Wertheim that owned a well-known retail store in Germany, was one that settled into the area in New Jersey.
The area is home to the Ocean Township Historical Museum located on Deal Road. The building, also known as the Eden Woolley House, was built in the 1700s by Thomas Woolley. Eden Woolley inherited the property in 1835, and in 1849, he became the first elected Councilman in the township. The historical structure was moved to its current location in 2005 and serves as a museum and library that was founded in 1984.
