The unincorporated community of West Belmar is a census-designated place, or CDP, and is located in Wall Township in the eastern section of Monmouth County, New Jersey. In 1609, Henry Hudson and his crew from the Dutch vessel Half Moon arrived in the greater area. However, Richard and Penelope Stout were with the first European settlers and majority landowners in the area. More Quaker families began to settle into the area after a land grant from Richard Nicolls was issued in 1665. They were followed by Scottish settlers in 1682 and then by Dutch colonists. The new settlers were welcomed by the Lenape Native Americans that initially inhabited the region. The natives lived in small camps throughout the area and developed relationships with the new settlers.
