West New York

Within Hudson County, New Jersey, is a town called West New York. It is situated in the northern region of the county upon the New Jersey Palisades. Its borders are formed by John F. Kennedy Boulevard, 51st Street, just north of 67th Street, and the Hudson River. From its waterfront locations, the Manhattan Skyline can be seen at night.

History

The town was incorporated in 1898 by the New Jersey Legislature. During the 1960s, the area became home to a large population of Cuban immigrants, giving the area the nickname Havana on the Hudson. It has the largest population of Hispanic residents in the United States. Due to the high-rise apartments taking up a lot of the 851.2 acres, which are some of the tallest in the area, the area has one of the highest population densities in the country as well. 

Neighborhood

The average household income was $44,657 and $42,534 for families. The residents in West New York are employed in a mix of both white and blue-collar occupations. As many as 30.15% have obtained at least a bachelor's degree. On average, the commute time for the working population is just over 37 minutes each way. Most use their own private vehicles, but some take advantage of the public transportation options. The breakdown of their occupations is the following:

  • 8.91% technical, office, and administrative support 
  • 8.5% food service

The area is home to Bergenline Avenue, one of the main shopping districts in the northern section of Hudson County and one of the longest commercial avenues in the state. Demographics

West New York's population was 49,708 in 2010 and consisted of 18,852 households and 11,783 families. This is an increase of 6.1% since 2000. Close to 61.02% of the residents were born outside of the United States. Spanish is most commonly spoke here, but English and the Languages of India are as well. The racial makeup of the neighborhood is the following:

  • 78.8% Hispanic or Latino
  • 1.5% Native American
  • 6.01% Asian 
  • 0.05% Pacific Islander
  • 20.19% other races
  • 5.61% two or more races
