Whitman Square

Whitman Square is an unincorporated community within the Washington Township situated in Gloucester County in New Jersey. Turnersville is to the north as Cross Keys is to the town's south. Sewell and Blackwood are to the west of the neighborhood, and across the Atlantic City Expressway is Sicklerville. The main roadways in the community are Johnson Road, Stagecoach Road, Whitman Drive, Standish Drive, and the Atlantic City Expressway. 

History

The area was initially home to the Lenni Lenape Native American Indians. Tribes settled along the creek that began at what used to be Baum Pond at an elevation of 135 feet. The creek flows for 1.9 miles north to meet Big Lebanon and is now referred to as Little Lebanon Branch and Big Timber Creek. Big Timber Creek was called Tetamekanchz by the local Lenape Native American tribe. Some of the first European families to settle in the greater area include:

• General William Joyce Sewell and his family - Sewell is named after
• the Turner family - Turnersville is named after
• the Hurff family - Hurffvile Elementary School is named after

Neighborhood

The area is mostly a residential neighborhood that was developed post World War II during the building boom. Most of the homes were built between 1940 and 1969. As many as 97% of the area is owner-occupied. Home prices average $255,915, and rent averaged $2,002 per month. The vacancy rate of the community is only 5.7%. 

Within the community is the Whitman Elementary School that opened in September of 1965. The school is rated A for its teachers, A- for academics, and B for diversity. There is a student-teacher ratio of 11-1, and as many as 67% of the students tested proficient in math and 65% in reading. 

Demographics

The area is home to approximately 3,720 residents, according to 2010 figures. English is the main language spoken by the people, but 10.6% speak Polish. The ancestral makeup of the residents is as follows:

• 35.7% Italian
• 28.3% Irish
• 22.1% German
• 10.4% Polish
• 8.5% English

The income of the greater area averaged $79,017 in 2010. This was an increase from $66,546 in 2000. The breakdown of occupations held by the townspeople included the following:

• 44.9% executive, management, and professional occupations
• 23.3% manufacturing and laborer occupations
• 18.8% sales and service jobs
• 13.1% clerical, assistant, and tech support roles
