The township of Winfield is located in the southern region of Union County in the state of New Jersey. The township takes up 115.2 acres and is located to the west of Linden and to the east of Garwood and Clark. Cranford is just north of the town, along with Roselle. The township was formed in 1941, following the beginning of the construction of Winfield Park, a Mutual Ownership Defense Housing Project. The main architect for the development and planning was John T. Rowland.
Mainly led by sociologist Robert K. Merton, the area was subject to many sociological research experiments. The first was by the Columbia University Bureau of Applied Social Research that compared the all-white public housing with others that were racially integrated.
