Woodcliff

The neighborhood of Woodcliff is located in the northeastern section of the North Bergen Township in Hudson County, New Jersey. To the north of the neighborhood is Racetrack Section and to the south is Guttenberg and West New York. To the west of the area is Bergenwood, while the Hudson River flows along the eastern border. 

History

Commodore de Kay once owned a portion of the land that is the present-day Woodcliff. In the early 1900s, the area was developed by the Woodcliff Land Improvement Company. Hamilton V. Meeks organized the development process in 1891. Meeks was a successful businessman in Hudson County. He was the president of Gardner & Meeks Company, which controlled large lumber interests at Guttenberg and Union Hill. After organizing the neighborhood, Meeks became the secretary and treasurer of the area. The construction of Grand Boulevard cost $3,000,000 and runs to the edge of Woodcliff, lying on the crest of the Hudson Palisades. From this elevated point, you can see a remarkable view of the New York City skyline. 

During the Revolutionary War, Meeks owned property across from one of Washington's headquarters. His wife was an interpreter for Washington and Lafayette during their stay. 

Neighborhood

The North Hudson County Park takes up the majority of the neighborhood, stretching across 167 acres. The park also referred to as James J. Braddock Park, is the home to the 16-acre Woodcliff Lake. There are 45 athletic facilities for the residents and visitors to use. In 1910 the park was established and named in honor of James J. Braddock, the local boxing World Heavyweight Boxing Champion from 1935 to 1937. In addition to the great views and nature walks, some of the many amenities in the park include: 

  • 21 tennis courts
  • three basketball courts
  • three bocce courts
  • handball courts
  • three football fields
  • six volleyball courts

The neighborhood is also home to many apartments and condominium complexes. The Robert Fulton School provides elementary-aged children a local school to attend. Other nearby schools include Public School #4 and the Anna L. Klein School. 

Demographics

As many as 45.9% of the area's residents were born in countries other than the United States. In fact, the area has a large Cuban and Dominican population. Spanish is spoken by 56.0% of the community in addition to English and Langs. of India. The ancestral makeup of the residents includes the following:

  • 14.3% Dominican
  • 11.6% Cuban
  • 10.2% Puerto Rican
  • 7.6% South American
  • 5.8% Italian

The per capita income in the greater area averaged $20,058 in 2000. The median income for men was $35,626, while women averaged $29,067 per year.  The occupational breakdown of the working residents was the following: 

  • 38.6% executive, management, and professional roles
  • 25.8% sales and service jobs
  • 23.0% manufacturing and laborer occupations
  • 12.6% clerical, assistant, and tech support positions
