History

The town was originally named West Paterson, but in November of 2008, the residents voted to rename it to Woodland Park. The name was based on the areas many wooded areas and reserved its W. P. initials. The decision was based on the area's desire to disassociate itself from the larger town of Paterson, which has a higher crime rate, among other reasons. The proposal won yet was petitioned by some residents to revert back to the original name in 2009; however, the vote in favor of keeping the new name was 2,248 to 2,216.

Located within the borough is the Morris Canal National Registered Landmark, added to the registry in 1973.
