History of the Manasquan River

The community lies along the Manasquan River. The river is 26.5 miles and begins in Freehold Township before it empties into the Atlantic Ocean at Point Pleasant, a borough in Ocean County. Three drawbridges cross the river, such as:

  • the Brielle Road Glimmer Glass Bridge
  • the Route 35 Manasquan River Bridge
  • the NJ Transit railroad bridge

The river was initially home to the Lenape Native American Indian Tribe. The name means "mouth of the river" in the language spoken by the Lenape. European settlers discovered the river as far back as the 1520s. Explorer Giovanni da Verrazano sailed up the coast of New Jersey to the area, and more settlers would join him shortly after.
