The area relies heavily on its tourism, which has decreased over the years. Although the area lost its miniature golf course and the 24-hour diner, two popular tourist destinations, many still flock to the area during the vacation seasons for surfing and other waterfront activities. The local bars in the area get overwhelmed during the spring and summer seasons, causing some businesses to only open during this time. Many of the beach bungalows that offered great rentals for the visitors were replaced with larger single-family homes offering locals year-round residency.

In addition to the coastal activities and nightlife, the area is home to the oldest home in the southern region of Monmouth County. Located on 105 South Street, the Bailey-Reed House Museum was built during the late 1700s. The Squan Village Historical Society has directed preservations and management since 1997. Tours of the house and its barn, constructed in 1813, are available during the week. Many of the rooms have been preserved and set up to reflect this time period; these rooms include:

  • Manasquan Room
  • Nautical Room
  • Children's Room

Another historic landmark is the Algonquin Arts Theatre, located at 60 Abe Voorhees Drive. Initially, it was built in 1938 to be used as a movie house but in 1994 became a space for professional live performances. The theatre has 540 seats, and in addition to hosting summer camps and improv nights, some of its shows include the following:

  • Rent
