Andrews

Andrews is a neighborhood located within the Winslow Township in Camden County. The area can be found at the intersection of Williamstown New Freedom Road and Erial Road. It is approximately 24.2 miles southeast of Philadelphia. 

History

Not much is know about the area of Andrews, but the township that it is included in was incorporated in 1845. The area was known for its prosperous glass business and its many resources, such as:

  • timber
  • clay
  • sand

The population began to increase in the early 20th century and mostly consisted of farmers. The expansion of the Atlantic City Expressway to Williamstown Road brought developers in 1965. Thousand of residential homes were built during the 1970s, and the population nearly doubled. Preservation areas would slow development during the 1980s. In the southern area of Andrews is the New Brooklyn Park that covers 758.38 acres. The park is home to the Great Egg Harbor River and has many miles of unmarked trails in addition to the following amenities:

  • outdoor amphitheater
  • pavilion with three tables
  • two playgrounds
  • softball field
  • sand volleyball court
  • two picnic areas

Neighborhood

The average cost for a house in the neighborhood is $265,744, which is more expensive than 25.6% of other New Jersey communities. Rent, however, is lower than 96.3% of other neighborhoods in New Jersey and averages $1,261 per month. Most residents in the area own rather than rent, but some apartment complexes located in the area include the Winslow House Apartments located off of Erial Road. 

The area is mostly made up of upper-middle-income households with a low poverty rate. The occupational breakdown of the area includes:

  • 37.8% executive, management, or professional occupations
  • 24.6% manufacturing or laborer occupations
  • 24.5% sales or service positions
  • 13.1% clerical, assistant, or technical support occupations

Public transportation is not used by many of the residents, and 88.3% drive their own vehicle to work each day. As many as 29.8% spend more than 45 minutes each way on their commute to work. 

Demographics

When combining it with the other regions in the Winslow Township, the population of Andrews was 39,499 in 2010. This was made up of 13,735 households and 10,178 families. English is the first language of 89.8% of the residents, but as many as 7.7% speak Spanish as well.
