History

The city was developed as a residential resort town by James A. Bradley in 1871. Bradley was a brush manufacturer from New York. The name of the city was in honor of the United States' first American bishop of the Methodist Episcopal Church, Francis Asbury.

During the 1950s, the area of farms converted to tracts of suburban homes with spacious yards. This encouraged more diversified population growth.

It was recognized by the National Register of Historic Places on August 18, 2015.

The Philadelphia Toboggan Company Carousel is now a part of the Casino Building on Asbury Avenue, near the Boardwalk. It was constructed in 1929 and installed in 1932.
