The borough of Deal is situated in the eastern section of Monmouth County in central New Jersey. The 844.8-acre neighborhood is on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean. Its neighboring towns are Deal Park, Elberon Park, Allenhurst, and Interlaken. The main roadways in the community include Atlantic Avenue, Norwood Avenue, Roseld Avenue, and Ocean Avenue.

The English initially settled the region in 1664. Thomas Whyte was one of the first landowners and purchased 500 acres along the coast. This area would be later named after the Englishtown he originated from. The town was incorporated on March 7, 1898, as a borough by the New Jersey Legislature act. It took portions of land from Ocean Township.

The coast was accustomed to being an entry point for German spies during World War II. Residents were required to stay away from the beaches and to refrain from directing light in the direction of the sea. A sign was affixed to a rock in the area notating these restrictions.

The community includes a large population of Orthodox Sephardic Jews with Syrian ancestry. As much as 80% of the town's population, in fact.
