Point Pleasant

The borough of Point Pleasant is located in the northeastern region of Ocean County, New Jersey. The borough took up 2,668.8 acres, of which 428.8 acres was water. The Manasquan River forms the northern border, while Beaverdam Creek forms the southern border. Point Pleasant Canal flows through the town with two lift bridges that allow passage using Route 88, also known as Ocean Road, and Bridge Avenue. 

History

The area was used as a ceremonial meeting place for the Lenape Native Americans. They referred to the area as the "Land of Tall Timber." The first settlements began in 1665, including: 

  • fishermen
  • farmers
  • boat builders

In 1850 Ocean County separated from Monmouth County and created Brick Township, including the area of Point Pleasant. The neighborhood split from the township in 1920, becoming the borough of West Point Pleasant until 1956. It was reincorporated in 1928. 

Neighborhood

The waterside borough has many amenities to offer to its residents. There are several parks scattered throughout the community that offer recreation and exercise. Some of these include:

  • Beaver Dam Creek County Park - located on Bridge Avenue
  • Community Park - located on Bridge Avenue
  • Slade Dale Sanctuary - located on Sea Point Drive 
  • Riverfront Park - located on River Road
  • McKennan Lake Field - located on Shadyside Avenue

The southern region sits on Bay Head Harbor and is host to many marinas and yacht clubs, including:

  • Canal Point Marina
  • Arnold's Yacht Basin
  • Shore Haven Yacht Club

Demographics

There were 19,306 residents as of the 2010 census count. This total included 7,560 households and 5,231 families. this was a decrease of 4.7% from 2000. The racial breakdown of the townspeople was the following:

  • 85.83% white 
  • 5.33% African American
  • 10.41% Hispanic or Latino
  • 0.15% Native American
  • 0.54% Asian
  • 0.01% Pacific Islander
  • 0.50% other races
  • 0.69% two or more races

The average income per household in the borough was $78,521 in 2010, increasing from $55,987 in 2000. The median family income was $94,399 versus $64,798 in 2000. Men averaged an annual income of $67,632 while women brought in an average of $47,428.
