Bay Head

The borough of Bay Head is situated in the northern region of Ocean County in the state of New Jersey. The community sits along the coast of the Atlantic Ocean. The Bay Head Harbor forms the southern border while Bay Avenue travels along the western edge. Some main roadways in the community include Ocean Avenue, Osborn Avenue, Club Drive, and East Avenue. 

History

The borough was named after the Bayhead Land Company that was developed the area in the 1870s. However, when the railroad sign was constructed, it read Bay Head instead. The area was incorporated into a borough by an act of the New Jersey Legislature in 1886, taking portions of land from Brick Township. 

The Bayhead Land Company was founded in 1879 by the following:

  • David H. Mount 
  • Edward Howe
  • Leavitt Howe
  • William Harris

The borough's first post office was established in 1882 with Julius Foster as the postmaster. By this year, the area had grown as a resort town with a population of 75 and included graded roads and 20 new cottages. 

Historical Landmarks

The borough has the largest historic district in the state, with over 550 contributing structures. In 2005, it was added to the New Jersey and the National Registers of Historic Places. Some of the buildings that can be seen in the historic district, in addition to the privately owned houses, includes:

  • All Saints Episcopal Church
  • Bay Head Chapel
  • L. Ron Hubbard Landmark
  • Loveland Homestead Museum

Neighborhood

The borough provides schooling for its residents from kindergarten to eighth grade at the Bay Head Elementary School located on Grove Street. There is the Point Pleasant Beach High School located in Point Pleasant Beach for children in ninth to twelfth grades.

There are many places of worship for the townspeople, such as: 

  • Holy Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church
  • Sacred Heart Church
  • All Saints Episcopal Church
  • St Paul's United Methodist Church

Demographics

The borough had a population of 968 residents and included 459 households and 270 families.  This was a decrease of 21.8% from 2000. The racial makeup of the community was the following:

  • 98.55% white 
  • 0.52% African American
  • 1.03% Hispanic or Latino
  • 0.00% Native American
  • 0.72% Asian
  • 0.00% Pacific Islander
  • 0.00% other races
  • 0.21% two or more races

In 2010 the annual income per household averaged $88,417 and for a family was $134,583. Men averaged a yearly income of $75,833, as the women averaged $60,625.
