Bayway is an unincorporated community located in the city of Linden situated in the southeastern region of Union County, New Jersey. Gulfport Reach forms the eastern border of the area while Morses Creek flows along the southern edge. The Bayway Refinery, now referred to as the Phillips 66 Refinery, is located in the heart of the industrial town on Park Avenue. John D. Rockefeller founded the refinery. During World War II, the facility provided high octane aviation fuel and manufactured materials that helped produce explosives. After the war, the refinery expanded thanks to an investment by Esso in 1947. This expansion allowed the facility to become the largest in the world for producing gasoline and heating oil.
Phillips Petroleum purchased the refinery in 2001 and, with the addition of a new polypropylene facility in 2003, produces 775 million pounds each year.
