Bergenfield

The borough of Bergenfield is located in the central region of Bergen County in New Jersey. The community took up 1,862.4 acres, of which 0.31% is water, including Cooper's Pond and Hirshfeld Brook. The neighboring communities include Dumont, Tenafly, Teaneck, West Englewood, New Milford, and River Edge. 

History

The town was named after its location in the county. The borough was officially formed on June 25, 1894, taking land from Englewood Township and Palisades Township. The same year, 26 other boroughs were formed in Bergen County. 

The Dutch were the first of the European immigrants to settle in the area, along with the Huguenots. The area was originally referred to as Schraalenburgh, which meant barren knoll or hill. Farms covered the area until after the Civil War, which brought industries such as:

  • a tannery
  • a sawmill and chair factory
  • a harness making shop
  • a shoemaking shop 
  • a blacksmith 
  • a wheelwright shop

After the war, the community saw a population boom. The area went from having 17,647 in 1950 to 29,700 in 1970. To accommodate the influx of residents, the following were added to the neighborhood:

  • 1955 - Little League Fields
  • 1959 - high school 
  • 1967 - middle school
  • 1969 - Bergenfield Free Public Library moved to its location on West Clinton Avenue
  • 1975 - Bergenfield Swim Club

Neighborhood

The borough offers its residents many places of worship, including:

  • St John Evangelist Roman Catholic - located on Washington Avenue
  • South Presbyterian Church - located on Church Street
  • All Saints Episcopal Korean Church - located on Central Avenue
  • Calvary Church - located on Clinton Avenue

The community is part of an initiative to boost district improvements, otherwise known as the Special Improvement District. The town's shopping and dining district is located on a one-mile stretch of Washington Avenue. Some dining options that help make up the over 50 restaurants include:

  • 25.60% Asian
  • 0.05% Pacific Islander
  • 10.12% other races
  • 3.80% two or more races

Of the population, as many as 4,569 identified as Filipino. Approximately 36.97% were born outside of the United States. Some other ancestries within the community include:
