Bridgeton

The city of Bridgeton is situated in the northwestern region of Cumberland County in New Jersey. The 4,153.6-acre community contains 4.10% or 172.8 acres of water. These bodies of water include the Cohansey River, East Lake, Jackson Run, and Indian Fields Branch, to name a few. Some of the closest communities are Fairfield, Deerfield, Millville, Rosenhayn, and Elmer. 

History

The Lenni Lenape Native Americans enjoyed living in the area due to the natural resources and abundant food sources, such as fish, farming, and game. The first Europeans began settlements in 1686, beginning with Richard Hancock. Hancock constructed a sawmill, and others settlers soon founded ironworks in 1814. By 1845, the area was incorporated as a township, taking land from the nearby Deerfield Township. It did not become a city until 1865. 

Historical Landmarks

The city's historic district has over 2,000 properties and covers more than a quarter of the city. Many of the early buildings were constructed in the 1920s and 1930s. However, some of the Victorian-style homes were built in the 1880s. Some of the oldest buildings include:

  • 1795 - Old Broad Street Presbyterian Church and Cemetery
  • 1750 - Potter's Tavern
  • 1790 - Olde Brearley Masonic Lodge

Along Old Commerce Street are some of the oldest row houses in the area, known as the 7 Sisters. Another historical place is only a recreation but is a great remembrance of the history of the Finnish and Swedish settlers. The open-air museum opened in 1988 and showcases a 17th-century Swedish farmstead. 

Neighborhood

The community is home to several shops in the downtown area. Some that can be found there include:

South Woods State Prison, the largest state prison in the state of New Jersey, is located on South Burlington Road in the southern region of the city. It first opened in 1997, and aside from housing more than 3,420 male inmates, it also employs many of the residents. 

Demographics

In 2010, the city had 25,349 people, 6,265 households, and 4,304 families. This was an increase of 11.3% from 2000, following a 20.2% increase from 1990 to 2000. The racial breakdown of the residents in the city was the following:

  • 32.64% white 
  • 35.49% African American
  • 43.58% Hispanic or Latino
  • 1.38% Native American
  • 0.60% Asian
  • 0.05% Pacific Islander
  • 25.71% other races
  • 4.13% two or more races

In 2015, the area had 32.0% of its population living below the poverty line. The median income per household was $31,044. Men averaged an annual income of $31,202, with women coming in close at $31,031. The following are some of the common occupations held by the employed neighbors:
