Brielle is a borough located in the southeastern region of Monmouth County in New Jersey. The area covers 1516.8 acres, of which 390.4 acres are water, such as the ponds and streams that line the Manasquan River Golf Course. Route 35 connects the town to Point Pleasant Beach, crossing over the Manasquan River. Sea Girt is to the north, and Allenwood is to the west of the neighborhood.
Based on excavations performed by archaeologists, the area was once home to the Lenape Native American tribes. Their settlements were along the present-day Birch Drive. The Native Americans farmed a lot of Monmouth County during the year and would use these settlements in the area for hunting and fishing.
Prior to the American Revolutionary War, the area, known then as Shrewsbury Township, was home to mostly farmers. During this time, salt was being imported from Britain, but the town opened the Union Salt Works. Unfortunately, in 1778 British loyalists burned it down. After a year, the salt factory reopened.
In the early 19th century, the Shrewsbury Township area was divided, and in 1881, several acres were purchased by developers. One developer was taken by the town's charm and said it reminded him of one he had visited in the Netherlands called Brielle, and from then on, the area was known as Brielle.
In the area is a 150-acre golf course, the Manasquan River Golf Club. The course is a private member-owned club that was founded in 1922 and opened in 1923. Golf course architect Robert White designed the course. It overlooks the river and includes the highest point on the Atlantic Seaboard from the Atlantic Highlands to Florida.
The coastal town is home to many waterfront businesses. The Manasquan Yacht Club, located off of Riverview Lane, has been in business since 1899. Some of the waterfront eateries include:
