The borough of Clayton is situated in Gloucester County in the state of New Jersey. The community takes up 4,646.4 acres and includes 115.2 acres of water. One of Fisler's descendants established a glassworks factory which led to the rapid growth of Fislertown.
The borough was created by an act of the state legislature on May 9, 1887, taking land from Clayton Township. The borough absorbed the remainder of Clayton Township on April 14, 1908, and that township was dissolved.
The Clayton Historical Museum, located on East Avenue, was established by the members of the Historic Society of the borough. The museum includes many historical glass pieces as well as Revolutionary War memorabilia.
Just off of East Linden Street is the historical Clevenger Brothers Glass Works. The Clevenger brothers established their own company in 1912. Many of the glassworks factories had begun to close due to automatic bottle blowing machines. The brothers still used the old ways of producing the early glassware by free blowing.
The Glassboro Wildlife Management Area lies in the northern region of the community. The preserve is 2,400 acres, half in Clayton and half in Glassboro, and small portions in Monroe Township.
