Collingswood

The borough of Collingswood is located in the northern region of Camden County in New Jersey. The borough covers 1,248 acres, of which 5.9% or 76.8 acres is water. Cooper River Lake flows along the northeastern border to the borough as Newton flows along the southwestern border. Some of the main roadways within the town are White Horse Pike, Haddon Avenue, South Park Drive, and West Collings Avenue. 

History

The Lenape Native Americans were the original settlers in the area before the Quakers came in the late 17th century. The English and Irish settled along Cooper River and Newton Creek. Most of the current borough was once part of a farm owned by the Collings family during the 18th and 19th centuries. The borough was officially incorporated in 1888. 

In 1888, a wealthy businessman and town resident by the name of Edward Collings Knight donated the land that became the 70-acre Knight Park located in the heart of the town. Knight was not only known for his wealth from sugar, but he also was established in the areas of real estate and the railroad. He was a descendant of the founding Collings family. 

Neighborhood

The main highlight of the neighborhood is Knight Park, located in the town's center off of West Collings Avenue. The 70-acre park surrounds a small lake. Many of the town's activities are held there, including sports activities and community events such as concerts and movies. The park offers its residents the following amenities:

  • a walking and biking path
  • pond for fishing
  • playground area
  • pavilions for birthdays
  • gazebo for pictures 

Located next to the park are the neighborhood middle and high schools. They offer their students tennis and basketball courts, among other sports fields.

In 2010 the borough had a population of 13,926 and included 6,299 households and 3,345 families. There were 6,822 housing units throughout the town. The makeup of the racial diversity included: 

  • 81.78% white
  • 9.11% African American
  • 0.32% Native American
  • 9.67% Hispanic or Latino
  • 2.20% Asian
  • 0.01% Pacific Islander
  • 4.01% other races
  • 2.56% two or more races

The community's average income was $58,769 and $74,236 for a family income. Men averaged an annual income of $54,088, while women averaged $48,816. The occupations most commonly held by the employed residents of the neighborhood included:

  • 7.3% business
  • 7.0% sales 
  • 5.9% healthcare
