Deerfield

The Township of Deerfield is situated in the northern region of Cumberland County in the state of New Jersey. It is included in the Vineland-Millville-Bridgeton Primary Metropolitan Statistical Area. The township takes up 10,803.2 acres, including 0.22% of water, such as Lummis Marsh Branch, Thundergust Brook, Chatfield Branch, and Lebanon Branch. The neighboring communities include Millville, Bridgeton, Pittsgrove, Alliance, and Fairfield. 

History

Early settlements began in 1725, with people from the Fairfield district moving into the area. It was incorporated as a precinct in 1748 and again as a township in 1798. It was named after a community in Massachusetts. In 1845, portions of land were taken by Bridgeton Township, and in 1922 portions were taken for Upper Deerfield Township. Some of the unincorporated communities within the township include:

  • Carmel 
  • Garton
  • Rosenhayn

Neighborhood

The neighborhood is home to three wineries. The Cedar Rose Vineyards located on Kenyon Avenue offer wine club memberships. The vineyard hosts events such as:

  • Trivia nights
  • Unplugged lights
  • Musical performances
  • Book clubs

The Terro Nonno Winery is located on Garrison Road. This family-owned and operated farm began in the early 1900s, but the vineyard was planted in 2014. The founder, Adamo Natale Pipitone, moved into the area from Sicily, Italy. The farmland has been passed down generations, and the name Terro Nonna translates to grandfather's land. 

The third winery was Southwind Vineyard & Winery, located on Lebanon Road. The winery recently closed but originally opened over 40 years ago. The family-owned business offered wine tasting tours along with horseback riding. The owner, Lorre Allen, had a French flair and a love for horses. At one point, yoga sessions even took place on the property. 

Demographics

The township had a population of 3,119, which made up 1,089 households and 810 families.

  • 3.85% two or more races

The households within the community had a median income of $68,571 in 2010, up from $45,365 in 2000. Men averaged a yearly salary of $46,309, while women averaged $31,574 per year. Some of the frequently held occupations include:
