Echelon

Echelon is a census-designated place, CDP, and an unincorporated community. It helps make up the Voorhees Township located in Camden County. It is 7.7 miles southeast of Cherry Hill and 16.8 miles from Philidelphia, Pennsylvania. The main roadways include Burnt Mill, West Somerdale, Echelon, and Gibbsboro Roads. The Cooper River forms the western border and Haddonfield-Berlin Road the western edge.

History

In 1939 Roger Smith and his wife Jeanette purchased approximately 150 acres for $1,000. The site contained an 1800s farmhouse and a barn. The first hangar for the Smith's airfield was the barn, and at night, they would use flares to light the runway. Mostly crop-dusting planes used the airport and held as many as twenty planes during the time.

The airport continued to grow and eventually consisted of the following upgrades:

  • three unpaved runways
  • several hangars
  • a fuel station
  • a cafe

After her husband died in a fatal plane crash in 1950, Jeanette leased the land. She eventually sold the property in 1962 to the Rouse Company, a developing firm founded by James Wilson Rouse. The next few years would transform the old airport into the Echelon Mall, which opened in 1970. At the time, it was the second-largest in South Jersey, with Cherry Hill being the largest.

The mall would change its name to the Voorhees Town Center in 2007. Some of the shops that can be found in the mall today include:
