The borough, Gibbsboro, is located within Camden County, New Jersey. It stretches across 1408 acres, of which 25.6 acres is water. It is 17.6 miles east of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The main roadways in the town are Clementon Road, Kirkwood Road, United States Avenue, and Lakeview Drive.

In 1714, George Matlack founded the area and built a mill situated on a branch of Cooper's Creek. The mill would be purchased by Joseph Hilliard in 1744, along with the surrounding land. This area became known as Hilliards Mill. Hilliard sold a section of the area to George Matlack's nephew, John Matlack, who left it to his daughter, Hannah Matlack Gibbs. Her homestead, the Gibb's Mill, was located on Silver Lake. Development around her estate would begin to take place.

Judge John Clement bought the estate in 1812. Even though some locals referred to the area as "The Centerville Millseat," Clement would officially name it Gibbsborough after the Gibbs family.

In 1852 John Lucas, an English painter, purchased the mill for his new facility that made paint. He tested all the area's water and found that the water in Silver Lake was the best for his products.
