A Closer Look at Edgewater, NJ

Edgewater

The borough of Edgewater is situated in the southeastern section of Bergen County in the state of New Jersey. The narrow 1,574.4-acre borough sits on the edge of 3.5 miles of the Hudson River. The towns that border the neighborhood include Grantwood, Fairview, Racetrack Section, and Woodcliff. River Road travels north and south up the borough.

Early History

Before the Europeans began their settlement in the 17th century, the area was home to the Lenape Native American tribe. David Pietersz Devries, also known as David Pietersen de Vries, was the first European settler in the area and purchased 500 acres of land from the Native American Tappan tribe. The area was founded under the name Vriessendael in 1640. However, in 1643 this first settlement was destroyed by the Native Americans in the Kieft's War.

A ferry service was established in 1758 by Etienne Burdett. The ferry service played an integral part during the Revolutionary War. It offered a continuous link for supplies, information, and transportation between Fort Lee and Fort Washington. After the war ended, the area converted into a resort town, and many large hotels were constructed. The ferry service continued to supply items across the river, including the cobblestones that paved the streets in Manhattan.

20th Century

Industrialization took over the southern end of the town as the north end remained residential. However, the industrial growth deterred the appeal that had created the resort town, and many of the hotels faded. Factories began producing goods such as:

  • chemicals
  • dyes
  • oils
  • sugars

However, with the increase in trucking and the decrease in the use of railroads, many factories were forced to close in the 1960s. The narrow streets of the borough could not maintain the large trucks and factories moved to other locations. By the 1980s, the industrial area was replaced by condominiums, and the town's population grew.
