Franklin

The township of Franklin is situated in the southern region of Gloucester County in the state of New Jersey. The 36,089.6-acre township has 0.99% or 358.4 acres of water. This includes Cedar Lake, McCarthys Lake, Malaga Lake, Franklinville Lake, and Iona Lake. Some of the communities that share a border are Monroeville, Pittsgrove, Alliance, Buena Township, Clayton, and Monroe. 

History

On January 27, 1820, the community became a township taking land from Woolwich Township and Greenwich Township. It was named in honor of the sixth President of the United States that served from October 1785 until November 1788, Benjamin Franklin.

Portions of the township's land were taken to form Clayton Township and Newfield. Some of the unincorporated communities within the town include:

  • Malaga
  • Plainville
  • Forest Grove
  • Franklinville
  • Fries Mills
  • Iona
  • Janvier

Neighborhood

Within the community is the Coda Rossa Winery, located on Dutch Mill Road. In 2002, the vineyard was first planted, but the current owners did not purchase the land until 2006. With 10 acres under cultivation, the winery opened in 2010 to the public. It produces up to 1,500 cases of wine each year. The winery's name means red tail in Italian, as the owners noticed many red-tail hawks that lived close to the farm. A few of the various types of wine the winery makes include:

  • Cabernet Franc
  • Cabernet Sauvignon

Demographics

As of 2010, the township had 16,820 people, 5,849 households, and 4,562 families within its borders. This was an increase of 8.8% from the count of 15,466 in 2000. There are a variety of racial and ethnic groups within the community, and the breakdown of the races includes the following:

  • 88.44% white 
  • 7.18% African American
  • 4.49% Hispanic or Latino
  • 0.20% Native American
  • 1.27% Asian
  • 0.03% Pacific Islander
  • 1.03% other races
  • 1.84% two or more races

The income within the borough is predominantly an upper-middle-income neighborhood, compared to the rest of the state. The median income for a household was $74,327, while the per capita was $32,141. The area has a mixed workforce of both white and blue-collar professions, which include the following:

  • 35.8% executive, management, and professional occupations
  • 29.5% manufacturing and laborer occupations
  • 18.5% sales and service jobs
  • 16.2% clerical, assistant, and tech support roles
