On January 27, 1820, the community became a township taking land from Woolwich Township and Greenwich Township. It was named in honor of the sixth President of the United States that served from October 1785 until November 1788, Benjamin Franklin.

Within the community is the Coda Rossa Winery, located on Dutch Mill Road. In 2002, the vineyard was first planted, but the current owners did not purchase the land until 2006. With 10 acres under cultivation, the winery opened in 2010 to the public. It produces up to 1,500 cases of wine each year. The winery's name means red tail in Italian, as the owners noticed many red-tail hawks that lived close to the farm. A few of the various types of wine the winery makes include:

  • Niagara
  • Pinot gris
  • Sangiovese
  • Cabernet Franc
  • Cabernet Sauvignon

As of 2010, the township had 16,820 people, 5,849 households, and 4,562 families within its borders. This was an increase of 8.8% from the count of 15,466 in 2000. There are a variety of racial and ethnic groups within the community, and the breakdown of the races includes the following:
