The personal injury lawyers in Hackensack, NJ, at Garden State Justice Group, would like to share some of the neighborhood's history and highlights.

Hackensack

The city is situated in the central section of Bergen County, New Jersey. It is located approximately seven miles from the George Washington Bridge, and from certain areas, the New York City skyline can be seen at night. Maywood is immediately to the west of the town, and Teaneck is to the east. The Hackensack River forms the eastern border. The Hackensack and St Joseph Cemeteries help separate the town from its northern neighbor, River Edge.

History

The area was initially home to the Lenni Lenape American Indians, who later were referred to as the Delaware Indians. The Hackensack River was derived from the Achinsah-sack name give to it by the Algonquian people. The Dutch settlers were the first Europeans to move into the area. The Dutch West India Company formed settlements along the river banks creating Bergen in 1660.

The area was originally called New Barbadoes Township, as it was formed in 1693 by the Royal charter. In 1710 it became the county seat for Bergen County based on its central location. It was formally incorporated into a city in 1921 and took on the name Hackensack.

Historical Landmarks

In 1696 the First Dutch Reformed Church was built on land donated by the Mayor. The current building that stands on its original churchyard on Court Street was rebuilt in 1791. The stones used in its construction display the monograms of the founding families. It is the oldest in the county and the second to the oldest church in the state.
