The city is situated in the central section of Bergen County, New Jersey. It is located approximately seven miles from the George Washington Bridge, and from certain areas, the New York City skyline can be seen at night. The area was originally called New Barbadoes Township, as it was formed in 1693 by the Royal charter. In 1710 it became the county seat for Bergen County based on its central location. It was formally incorporated into a city in 1921 and took on the name Hackensack.
In 1696 the First Dutch Reformed Church was built on land donated by the Mayor. The current building that stands on its original churchyard on Court Street was rebuilt in 1791. The stones used in its construction display the monograms of the founding families. It is the oldest in the county and the second to the oldest church in the state.
Per the 2010 census, the community's population was 43,010 and consisted of 18,142 households and 9,706 families. This was an increase of 333 residents from the count of 42,677 in 2000. The racial makeup of the neighborhood residents is the following:
