A Quick History of Tavistock, NJ

The slip and fall attorneys in Tavistock, NJ, at Garden State Justice Group, have compiled some history and fun details about the neighborhood.

Tavistock

The borough of Tavistock is located within the southwestern region of Camden County, New Jersey. This 179.2-acre area is just south of Haddonfield and east of Haddon Heights. The main roadways are Warwick Road, which creates its western border, and Interstate 295 that passes through. The closest exit from Intestate 295 is at Essex Road, just east of the neighborhood.

History

During the Prohibition era, Haddonfield was a dry borough and governed under local Blue Law. These laws meant that the residents were restricted on what could and could not be done on Sundays, in addition to the prohibition of any alcohol sales or possession. Under this Blue Law, they were not allowed to do the following on Sundays in religious observation of rest:

  • shopping
  • sports or recreational activities
  • traveling
  • advertising
  • hunting or fishing
  • farmwork
  • labor

The members of the Victor Talking Machine Company disagreed with the idea that they were restricted from visiting the Haddon County Club and petitioned to secede from the dry borough. In 1921, the borough of Tavistock was formed. Some prominent members of the club included the following:

  • State Senator Joseph Wallworth
  • Assembly Speaker T. Harry Rowland

Frank Middleton purchased the Tavistock Farm in 1917 from Mary Gill Hopkins of the Gill family. The Gill family had purchased 300 acres from John Cox in 1747. Through the generations became the inheritance of Mary Gill Hopkins, wife of John Hopkins, a well-known physician and the founder of the Baltimore Hospital and Medical School.

Neighborhood

The few residential homes in the community are situated at the end of a golf course managed by the private Tavistock Country Club. Less than 6 acres of water make up the small lakes located within the golf course.

Demographics

As of 2010, the neighborhood's population was five people that resided in three households. Married couples made up two of the households. This was a decrease of 19 residents since 2000 when there were seven households. However, the largest the area's population grew was in 1990 with 35 residents.

The average household income was $58,750 in 2000, with males making $76,2650 and the females averaging $46,250. The current median age of the citizens is 65 years old.

  • Mayor Joseph Del Duca
  • John Aglialoro
  • Joan Carter
