Wallington

The borough of Wallington is situated in the northeastern section of Bergen County, New Jersey. This 672-acre community is located just east of Passaic and north of Rutherford. Paterson Avenue, the Passaic River, and Saddle River create three of the town's borders. The eastern edge follows the NJ transit railroad lines that head out of Westmont Station. 

History

In 1895 the area consisting of land from Bergen Township and Saddle River Township was officially incorporated into a borough. The borough was named after former town resident Walling Van Winkle. Van Winkle was an early settler from the Netherlands that came with his family to America in 1630. His father was one of the twelve councilmen who were the first New York representatives, New Jersey and Connecticut. 

The town holds an annual holiday parade with the Wallington Fire Department. Its fire trucks and ambulances decorate with lights and host the parade. A contest determines which one has the most festive decorations and awards a trophy to the winner. 

Parks and Recreation

The area is home to several parks, like Main Ave Park, which is situated along the Passaic River; other parks include:

  • Wallington Memorial Park - located on Parkview Drive 
  • Samuel Nelkin County Park - located on Parkview Drive 
  • Dul Fields - located on Johnson Avenue
  • Lexington Ave Park - located on Lexington Avenue
  • Cresent Park - located on Franklin Avenue
  • Hathaway Park - located on Hathaway Street

The population as of 2010 was 11,335 and was made up of 4,637 households and 2,991 families. The racial breakdown of the residents was the following:

  • 85.48% white
  • 3.23% African American
  • 10.81% Hispanic or Latino
  • 5.57% Asian
  • 0.16% Native American
  • 0.00% Pacific Islander
  • 3.86% other races
  • 1.70% two or more races

Of the population, 42.98% were born outside of the United States. Other than English, some of the townspeople speak Polish and Spanish. The neighborhood has the seventh-highest Polish population in the United States. Some other ancestries found among the residents include:

The annual median household income of the community was $58,724, up from $45,656 in 2000. The occupational breakdown of the employed adults is the following:
