Kirkwood, New Jersey, is an unincorporated community situated in the Voorhees Township in Camden County. The main roadways through the neighborhood are Berlin and Gibbsboro Roads. It is 16.3 miles southeast of Philidelphia, Pennsylvania. 

History

In 1838, the Kirkwood Gristmill was built. Unfortunately, it burned down in 1911. 

The Kirkwood area was initially called White Horse, followed by Marl City before officially becoming Kirkwood. The Kirkwood Marl and Fertilizing Company was established in 1879. Some of the company organizers included:

  • secretary and treasurer - Joel P. Kirkbride
  • superintendent - George M. Rogers
  • directors - John F. Bodine, Peter L. Voorhees, and Harvey Quicksall

The residential area surrounding Kirkwood Lake was originally home to many Sears-Roebuck catalog houses used for vacation homes by wealthy Philidelphia and Camden residents.
