A Historical Look at Maple Shade Township, NJ

The personal injury lawyers in Maple Shade Township, NJ, at Garden State Justice Group, have kindly provided some interesting details about the township's history.

Maple Shade Township

The township of Maple Shade is situated in the northwestern region of Burlington County in the state of New Jersey. The township takes up 2,451.2 acres, of which less than 6.4 acres is water. This includes the Pennsauken Creek that flows along the western border, separating it from Colwick, Bon Air, Iron Rock, and Cherry Hill Estates. The main roadways that travel through the township are Forklanding Road, Main Street, Coles Avenue, Mill Road, Stiles Avenue, and Highway 73.

Early History

One of the first families to settle in the area was the Roberts family in 1682. More settlers and the families of the original settlers began to encourage the development and sharing of the large plantations into smaller properties, still agricultural in nature. The railroad brought businesses including brick making in 1867, butchering, and meat processing, in addition to clothing manufacturing in 1883.

The establishment of churches followed the population growth in 1888 with the Episcopal congregation and adding Roman Catholic, Lutheran, Congregational, Baptist, and Jehovah’s Witness through the years. Several more earmarking events followed, such as:

  • first waterworks in 1893
  • telephones in 1893
  • a local post office in 1887
  • the first police officer in 1911
  • the first fire company formed in 1899

The neighborhood was initially known as Chester Township and was a neighborhood of Moorestown Township. However, in 1922, the residents voted to separate from Moorestown and elected a township committee. The first Municipal Building on Main Street was constructed in 1927, and in it was the first public library in 1930. In 1945, the community voted to change its name to Maple Shade Township.

Historical Landmark

The Chesterford Schoolhouse, located on Main Street, was built around 1811 and is one of the few well-preserved schools from the 19th century in the state of New Jersey. It was a one-room brick schoolhouse, also known as the Little Red Schoolhouse. The school served the early residents of the township for 97 years but closed in 1909.
