The township of Montclair is situated in the northern section of Essex County, New Jersey. The community sits at an elevation of 299 feet and covers 4,000 acres. There are 6.4 acres of water, including Second River and Toney's Brook. The surrounding communities are Cedar Grove, Verona, Clifton, Nutley, and West Orange. 

History

The township was formed in 1868, taking land from Bloomfield Township for the purpose of hosting a second railroad. It was reincorporated into a town in 1894 and was named after the French term meaning clear mountain. Due to financial reasons and desiring to obtain more federal funding, it became a township in 1980, along with a dozen other municipalities seeking more revenue-sharing benefits.

The area was the base for the performance group, Whole Theatre, established in 1971 by actor Louis Zorich and his wife, Olympia Dukakis. Some of the production performed included:
