The unincorporated community of Oakhurst is located in Ocean Township in the eastern section of Monmouth County in the state of New Jersey. The neighborhood is a census-designated place, or CDP, and has an elevation of 46 feet as it takes up 1,032.96 acres. There are 1.92 acres of water within the community, including the Poplar Brook that flows in the southern region of the neighborhood. Some of the nearby towns are Elberon Park, Deal Park, West Deal, Wayside, and Wertheins Corner.
The early community was home to the tradesmen and craftsmen that served the shorefront resort mansions. It increased in development following a Newark newspaper that sold lots near the area as bonuses for subscribers. Small homes were constructed as summer homes in these properties, but many foreclosed during the Depression.
In the 19th century, the area began to develop as a commercial and residential community. In the 1940s, the area's population increased as many war veterans returned looking for areas with jobs and schools.
The neighborhood is home to the largest park in the Ocean Township, the Joe Palaia Park. The park was the former location for the Deal Test Site. The research was conducted on the site after Western Electric purchased it in 1919. In 1927, it was sold to AT&T and took up 145 acres. Wireless experiments that involved five radio towers allowed them to broadcast audio up to 1,000 miles.
In the 1950s and 1960s, the facility monitored missiles and satellites that were launched from Cape Kennedy. The site helped with the development of weather satellites such as the TIROS-1 and TIROS-2. The army was able to use the equipment to send the first photograph by fax to Puerto Rico. By the 1970s, the site was no longer used for experiments, but one of the large antenna bases can still be seen today.
The Joe Palaia Park was established in the 1990s and included a 3-mile paved pathway. On the park grounds are the following amenities for the residents to enjoy:
The community was home to 3,995 residents in 2010, which made up 1,372 households and 1,125 families. This was a decrease of 3.8% from the count of 4,152 in 2000. The racial makeup of the neighborhood residents included the following:
