Oaklyn

The borough of Oaklyn is situated in the northern region of Camden County in the state of New Jersey. The borough takes up 441.6 acres, of which 8.70% or 38.4 acres are water, including Peter Creek. Newton Lake helps form the northern border as East Clinton Avenue, and White Horse Pike form other sides of the borough.

History

When the Lenape Native Americans dwelled in the area, it was covered with dense forests. In search of freedom of religion, a group of Quakers landed in the state in 1681. They were originally from Ireland and traveled up Newton Creek, under the lead of William Bates. Bates purchased 250 acres just south of the Natives in 1682 and began the settlement that would be later called Newton Colony. As the land was designated for farming, the population grew. Roads were constructed, and one leading to Egg Harbor is now Black Horse Pike. The other road traveled from Atlantic City to Camden and is now White Horse Pike.

Following the Revolutionary War, a racetrack was built near White Horse Pike. A group of sportsmen from Virginia constructed the track, and United States President Ulysses S. Grant was known to visit the track as a child. Unfortunately, the track closed in 1846.

The area continued to grow, and farms were divided up and sold as lots for residential development. In reference to the many trees, the town became known as Oakland the Beautiful, but due to confusion with the other city in the state, it was changed to its current name in 1894. In 1905, the town was incorporated as a borough and took portions of land that was originally in Haddon Township.
