The borough of Pitman can be found in the central region of Gloucester County in New Jersey. The small borough takes up 1,446.4 acres, including 256 acres of water, such as Alcyon Lake, Chestnut Branch, Mantua Creek, and Glen Lake. The neighboring communities include Glassboro, Washington Township, Clayton, and Cross Keys. The main thoroughfares are Broadway, Woodbury Road, Delsea Drive, and Lambs Road.
The area was initially home to a Methodist summer camp, as the location was established in 1871 by the Mantua and Glassboro Townships. In 1872, the New Jersey Conference Camp Meeting Association was founded and granted the land. Planning and development of the meetings and campground soon followed. An auditorium was erected at the central grounds for the gatherings with twelve roads coming out, similar to tire spokes. This region became known as the historical Pitman Grove.
Cottages began to replace the camping arrangements, and by the 1880s, as many as 400 cottages were finished with year-round residents living in them. A school was built to accommodate the new residents by 1884. On May 24, 1905, the community was incorporated as a borough, following a residential vote in 1904.
The area of Pitman Grove was inducted into the National Register in 1977. This circular park includes the auditorium that was built in 1871 as a preaching stand. The auditorium has since been restored but continues to host meeting each year and is owned by the borough.
Within the area is a museum that the Memorabilia Committee maintains. They offer many photos of the borough's rich history. Many homes that line the twelve avenues were built around 1900 and offer historical colonial architectural charm.
