The borough is situated in the northeastern section of Ocean County, in the state of New Jersey. The 1,113.6-acre neighborhood consists of 18.22% of water, such as Cooks Creek, Lake Louise, Silver Lake, and Lake of the Lilies. The borough's eastern edge sits along the Atlantic Ocean coast. The town is just south of Manasquan and Brielle but north of Bay Head and Point Pleasant.
Prior to Henry Hudson noticing the area in 1609, it was the home of the Lenape Native American Indians. The first European settlements in the 18th century took advantage of the resources the area had to offer and were fishermen and farmers. Tourism began during the summers following the 19th century. Thomas Cook Jr, a Quaker, began a trend by allowing visitors to rent rooms from his farmhouse while they enjoyed the summer months on the coast. In 1870, Captain John Arnold built a road to the ocean that is now known as Arnold Avenue. Just five years later, he constructed the first bridge over the Manasquan River, allowing travel to Brielle.

The borough's population was 4,665 in 2010, according to the census. This consisted of 1,985 households and 1,122 families. This was a decline of 12.2% in residents from 2000. The racial makeup of the community was the following:
The annual income median for the households in the borough was $57,792 and for a family was $65,402. The men averaged a yearly income of $54,327 while the women averaged $39,076.
