History

Prior to Henry Hudson noticing the area in 1609, it was the home of the Lenape Native American Indians. The first European settlements in the 18th century took advantage of the resources the area had to offer and were fishermen and farmers. Tourism began during the summers following the 19th century. Thomas Cook Jr, a Quaker, began a trend by allowing visitors to rent rooms from his farmhouse while they enjoyed the summer months on the coast. In 1870, Captain John Arnold built a road to the ocean that is now known as Arnold Avenue. Just five years later, he constructed the first bridge over the Manasquan River, allowing travel to Brielle.
