The slip and fall attorneys in Racetrack Section, NJ at Garden State Justice Group have provided some interesting details regarding the neighborhood's history along with the present-day community it has become.
The neighborhood is also referred to as Hudson Heights and is part of the Township of North Bergen, situated in the northern section of Hudson County, New Jersey. It is the region that lies between Bergenline Avenue and John F. Kennedy Boulevard. Bergenwood is to the west, and Woodcliff is to the east of the community. Fairview is just north of the community, and North Bergen is to the south.
The residential district was named after the Nungesser's Guttenberg Racetrack. During the late 19th century, the racetrack was a popular attraction in the neighborhood. New Yorkers would travel by streetcar, taking the Weehawken Ferry to visit the tracks. The newly invented ice cream cone was made popular in the park. The area was referred to as the pleasure resort and quickly gained a negative reputation for its rowdy crowds.
Gaming was outlawed in 1893 by the New Jersey legislature. The track was converted into use as a roadhouse for automobilists. The clubhouse burned to the ground in 1910, and the site turned into a landing pad for aviators. In 1919 the land was divided into sections and became used for more residential development. The intersection of Bergen's border and Fairview's, formed by Bergeline Avenue and Anderson Avenue, is still referred to as Nungesser's and is now the site of a White Castle.
Along the town's border, in the eastern section of the neighborhood, is the James J. Braddock North Hudson County Park. The park offers the community various amenities within its 167 acres, including the 16-acre lake, Woodcliff Lake. Some of these amenities include:
