Rochelle Park

The township Rochelle Park is located within Bergen County, New Jersey. The neighborhood takes up 652.8 acres, with 3% being water. It is a 14-minute drive from Paterson, New Jersey. The Saddle River creates the western border, and NJ Route 17 runs along the inside of its eastern border. 

History

The township was initially included in Midland Township but would become its own township on November 5, 1929. The name change was partly due to the confusion it caused with Midland Park, a nearby town. The name Rochelle would come from La Rochelle, a port city in France. 

Places of Interest

Some historical places in the area include the following:

  • 1824 - the Cornelius Demarest House - built for his son by Samuel C. Demarest 
  • the mid-1860s - the Captain William Tyson House - this house was built using an Italianate architectural style for a New York shipowner and still stands today as the town's oldest building. 

The town is home to many parks and recreational facilities, including the following:

  • the Rochelle Park Swim Club - a private club located on Lotz Lane
  • the Rochelle Park Area - located within the Saddle River County Park and offers biking, jogging, and many athletic courts. 
  • the Bergen County Rochelle Park - located on Railroad Avenue

As of 2010, Rochelle Park had a population of 5,530 that consisted of 2,087 households and 1,455 families. The average income per household was $66,341 and for families was $81,113. The occupational breakdown of the residents is:
