Sewaren

The unincorporated community of Sewaren is located within the Woodbridge Township, situated in the northeastern section of Middlesex County, New Jersey. The community, also a census-designated place, or CDP, takes up 642.56 acres, of which 5.02% or 32 acres. The closest communities to the town include Port Reading, Maurer, Woodbridge, Carteret, and Avenel. Arthur Kill flows along the eastern border, and the New Jersey Turnpike helps form the western edge. 

History

The area was once known as a resort community that attracted many city residents with its charm and waterfront amenities. John
Taylor Johnston purchased 300 acres along Arthur Kill in 1872. The New York financier planned to develop the area, then referred to as East Woodbridge, into a vacation spot for city residents. Unfortunately, his dream never amounted to much as his finances suffered a downturn. However, in 1887 his son-in-law, Robert DeForest, constructed a hotel in the neighborhood called The Sewaren House. It is said that the former President of the United States, Grover Cleveland, would frequent the hotel while spending his time fishing. Some of the amenities the complex offered its guest included:

Neighborhood

The seaside town has much to offer the residents and guests. Some of the dining options available include:

There is the Jan and Jerry's Marina located off of Cliff Road near the shore. Buffer Strip Park on Ferry Street offers outdoor activities for the residents to enjoy, such as an open field and a playground.

Demographics

As of the count in the 2010 census, the community had 2,756 residents, making up 1,005 households and 722 families. The racial breakdown of the population was the following:

  • 79.54% white
  • 7.98% African American
  • 0.15% Native American
  • 18.69% Hispanic or Latino
  • 6.20% Asian
  • 0.18% Pacific Islander
  • 3.74% other races
  • 2.21% two or more races

The household income median was $62,381 in 2000 and for a family was $72,685. Men averaged an income of $46,683 per year versus $35,655 per year for women. The most commonly held occupations within the community include:
