The unincorporated community of Silver Lake is a census-designated place, or CDP, located in the eastern region of Essex County in the state of New Jersey. The community takes up 208.64 acres and has an elevation of 112 feet. The neighborhood is situated within two towns, Belleville and Bloomfield. Some of the neighboring communities include Forest Hill, Woodside, Broadway, Ampere, and Upper Roseville.
The community was named after a lake that was created in 1730 by Jasper Crane. Crane constructed a dam near the current location of St. Anthony’s Church, at Lake and Franklin Street. The dam formed Silver Lake that was 300 feet wide and a half-mile long. A storm in 1889 caused flooding in the area that destroyed the dam resulting in the lake draining. By 1920 there were no traces of the lake within the community.
The neighborhood is home to two retail centers, the Staples Bloomfield Plaza and the Franklin Square Plaza. The Staples Bloomfield Plaza is located at the south end of the community on Grove Street and Bloomfield Avenue. The main shops in the plaza include:

The community falls between Halcyon Park and Branch Brook Park. Halcyon Park, located on Parkway East, is a small green space with a small pond and benches to enjoy the view. Branch Brook Park, located on Branch Brook Park Drive, offers over 360 acres to the residents and is home to a dog park. Both parks have been added to the National Register of Historic Places.
The CDP had 4,243 residents per the 2010 census. This count made up 1,587 households and 1,051 families. Additionally, there were 1,733 housing units within the community. The racial makeup of the CDP was the following:
