The unincorporated community of Smithville is also a census-designated place or CDP. It is located in Galloway Township in the eastern section of Atlantic County, New Jersey. The community covers 3,235.2 acres and includes 34.56 acres of water. The Smithville Inn was built in 1787 by James Baremore along a busy stagecoach route. By 1874 the inn had grown to six times its original size. Despite its success, the inn was abandoned at the beginning of the 1900s. Ethel and Fred Noyes purchased the inn in 1952. They restored the inn and opened it as a restaurant called Fred and Ethel's Lantern Light Restaurant and Tavern. In 1964 United States Department of the Interior proclaimed it as a historic landmark.
