Smithville

The unincorporated community of Smithville is also a census-designated place or CDP. It is located in Galloway Township in the eastern section of Atlantic County, New Jersey. The community covers 3,235.2 acres and includes 34.56 acres of water. Other communities that help to form the township are Absecon Highlands, Brigantine Junction, Cologne Station, Johnsontown, Leeds Point, Oceanville, Pinehurst, and South Egg Harbor.

History

The Smithville Inn was built in 1787 by James Baremore along a busy stagecoach route. By 1874 the inn had grown to six times its original size. Despite its success, the inn was abandoned at the beginning of the 1900s. Ethel and Fred Noyes purchased the inn in 1952. They restored the inn and opened it as a restaurant called Fred and Ethel's Lantern Light Restaurant and Tavern. In 1964 United States Department of the Interior proclaimed it as a historic landmark.

In the 1960s, the restaurant expanded the site into a historical village. Several historic buildings from around southern New Jersey were moved to the site, restored, and turned into shops and attractions. The Village Greene was formed in 1990 as the second part of the historic village, including:

  • stores
  • paddle boats
  • miniature golf
  • a carousel
  • an old-fashioned steam train

Some of the shops included in the quant village include:

  • Out of Ireland
  • Two Country Ducks
  • Fairest of Them All
  • Locket Closet Inspirations

The same company that constructed the historic village began construction on a planned development that was to include 6,800 condominiums. However, some legal issues reduced the number of units to 4,000, and a recession in 1991 halted development at 1,600 units. The company sold the property to KHovnanian, who converted the condos into a 1,200-unit retirement community known now as the Four Seasons at Historic Smithville.
