Somers Point

The city of Somers Point is situated in the southern region of Atlantic County, New Jersey. The city takes up 3,347.2 acres, of which 780.8 acres was water. Some of the bodies of water included Mill Creek, Patcong Creek, Steelman Bay, and Drag Channel. A few of the neighboring communities include Linwood, Ocean City, Longport, and Margate City. 

History

The area's first European settler was John Somers, hence the name of the city, which was established in 1750. In 1693 Somers purchased the tract of land from Thomas Budd. It is the oldest settlement in the county. Initially, the community was a summer resort that contained many boarding houses. 

The community was first incorporated as a borough in 1886, but it was reincorporated as a city in 1902. The area took land from portions of Egg Harbor Township. 

Historical Landmarks

The city is home to the Somers Mansion, located on Shore Road within the Historic Old Town. The house, formerly part of the first settler's estate, was built in 1725 and is one of the oldest buildings in the state. The family owned the mansion until it was deeded to The Atlantic County Historical Society in 1937. It became a historic site after it was transferred to the state in 1941. The home contains a collection of quilts and coverlets in addition to other historical objects. 

The Historical Society, built in 1886, offers the community and its visitors a chance to purchase memorabilia at their gift shop. Additionally, guests can browse over 4,000 historical photographs. The society also hosts many events, including the following:

Neighborhood

The community has many outlets for the artistic residents. Some of these galleries include:

  • Great Bay Art Gallery - located on Bay Ave near Old Town
  • Chora Leone Gallery - located on Bethel Road
  • Saunders Studios - located on Sunny Avenue
  • Kaleidoscope - located on Shore Road

The Greate Bay Country Club has served the community as a golf course and a beautiful venue since opening in 1923. Donald Ross designed the club in 1921. The course was designed in 1922 by Willie Park Jr., the first professional golfer in history. 

Demographics

As of 2010, the city had 10,795 people, 4,655 households, and 2,826 families. The racial breakdown of the townspeople was the following:

  • 78.75% white

  • 0.25% Native American
  • 3.08% Asian
  • 0.06% Pacific Islander
  • 4.17% other races
  • 3.02% two or more races
