Estell Manor

The city of Estell Manor is located in the southern section of Atlantic County in the state of New Jersey. Many unincorporated communities are found within the city, such as Estellville, Head of River, Hunters Mill, Oakville, Gibsons Landing, Old Etna Furnace, among others. The 35,315.2-acre city shares a border with Hamilton, Tuckahoe, Mays Landing, and Egg Harbor City.

The Native Americans first inhabited the region. One of the earliest families to settle in the area was the Estell family. The town was home to the Estellville Glassworks factory built by John H. Scott in 1826 for the Estell family. Production at the glassworks factory began in 1826 and was the first to produce both hollow glass and window glass. The Estell family operated the factory until 1858. The factory passed through many owners before finally closing in 1877.

The city was named after the early family and was incorporated as a city in 1925, taking portions of land from Weymouth Township.

Within the northern section of the city is the Atlantic County Veterans Museum, located on Route 50 South. The museum is in the historic Daniel Estell house and sits across from the Atlantic County Veterans Cemetery. The house was also once the home of the first female mayor, Rebecca Estell Bourgeois Winston. It was constructed in 1832 by her grandfather. The county purchased the estate in 1993 to serve as a tribute to the local veterans and to honor the history. Many of the exhibits include:

  • war memorabilia
  • war uniforms
  • historical photographs
  • old newspapers
