History

The Native Americans first inhabited the region. One of the earliest families to settle in the area was the Estell family. The town was home to the Estellville Glassworks factory built by John H. Scott in 1826 for the Estell family. Production at the glassworks factory began in 1826 and was the first to produce both hollow glass and window glass. The Estell family operated the factory until 1858. The factory passed through many owners before finally closing in 1877.

The city was named after the early family and was incorporated as a city in 1925, taking portions of land from Weymouth Township.

The museum is in the historic Daniel Estell house and sits across from the Atlantic County Veterans Cemetery.
