Melrose

The neighborhood of Melrose is located within the town of Sayreville in Middlesex County, New Jersey. The neighborhood is situated just north of South Amboy and across the Raritan River from Perth Amboy. The main roadways in the area are the Garden State Parkway, New Jersey Route 9, Route 35, Main Street, and Raritan Street. There is the Victory Bridge and the Governor Alfred E. Driscoll Bridge to cross over the Raritan River. 

Early History

Along the Raritan River edge, amateur archaeologists have found many artifacts that led them to believe the area was initially inhabited by the Tribes of Navaesink, which also lived near the South River. The Dutch settlers purchased land from the Native Americans in 1663. 

History

The township of Sayreville was established in 1876 using land from South Amboy and its surroundings. The area and its communities were under one municipal government. The other communities that were included aside from Melrose were:

  • Ernston
  • Morgan
  • Sayre’s Village

Neighborhood

the area is home to Station 3 of the Sayreville Fire Department, the Melrose Hose Company. The volunteer fire department is located on Oak Street. The Sayreville Fire Department serves the entire 17 square miles and protects over 45,000 residents, and consists of four stations: 

  • Sayreville Engine Co. 1
  • Melrose Hose Co.
  • Morgan Hose Co. 
  • President Park Fire Co.

Within the center of the town, on JOak Street, is the quaint Melrose Park. The park offers the residents the following amenities: 

  • large fields 
  • benches
  • shaded areas
  • fenced-in playground area
  • basketball courts 

Demographics

As many as 24.5% of the neighborhood's residents were born in countries other than the United States. English is spoken by 64.9%, and 3.9% speak the languages of India. Spanish and Polish are also spoken in the community. The ancestral makeup of the town's residents was the following:

  • 18.7% Polish
  • 17.8% Irish
  • 17.2% Italian
  • 12.5% Puerto Rican
  • 6.9% Asian
  • 2.0% Romanian

The area is predominantly an upper-middle-income neighborhood. The greater area's median income per household was $71,808 in 2010. The breakdown of occupations held in the area was: 

  • 35.3% management and professional positions
  • 28.7% service and sales jobs
  • 26.0% laborer and manufacturing occupations
  • 10.0% assistant, clerical, and technical support positions
